The Phoenix Effect

Can you be remade?

On one side of the war over nanotechnology is the Unity: an advanced society protected by an army of virtually immortal, nanite-injected soldiers. Opposing them is the Resistance: simple people who have been pushed to the rural fringes of the world.

When Arin, a Unity soldier, captures Lia, his childhood love turned Resistance assassin, he makes the snap decision to conceal her identity to save her life.  Arin and Lia evade Unity patrols and escape toward the safety of the desert.  As Lia leads Arin deep into Resistance territory, he discovers that Lia is no rogue assassin, but an integral part of a huge clandestine Resistance army and wife of the army’s formidable leader, Roland.

Once among the Resistors, Arin comes to understand their way of life and chooses to have his nanites extracted to live as a mortal once again.  While Arin proves his newfound loyalties to the Resistors, and to Lia, he uncovers a great secret hidden by Roland, one that may change the future forever.
